Living Desert Sculptures
The awe inspiring Living Desert Sculptures are deservedly the most iconic and photographed attraction in Broken Hill. Nestled amongst the Barrier Ranges, the Living Desert Reserve is easy to access and located just 12km from the city centre. Take your time and explore the spectacular topography and scenery within the vast 2400ha reserve. No matter what your level of fitness, numerous walking trails will reward you with breathtaking views and countless photo opportunities.
But that’s not all there is to see. Resting in the tranquility of the gullies and rocky outcrops is the 180ha Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. Bordered by a predator-proof fence, the sanctuary invites visitors to get closer to our outback plants and animals, and gain an understanding of our region’s Aboriginal heritage and the importance of preserving this environment for future generations. Keep your eyes open for native wallabies, emus and wedge-tailed eagles.
And of course, the major attraction within the Living Desert is the Sculpture Site. In 1993, artist Lawrence Beck organised and directed a successful sculpture symposium on this majestic hilltop (within the centre of the reserve) by artists from around the world. The stunning result – 12 giant sandstone sculptures highlight the outback skyline, each with a story to tell. This ‘must see’ Sculpture Site is an easy 1km stroll along a walking trail which starts at the Flora and Fauna Sanctuary car park. Or you can drive to the sculptures.
Pack some refreshments and enjoy the recreational picnic area with free gas barbeques, shade shelters and toilets.
You should allow at least 2 hours to fully explore and enjoy the Cultural Walk Trail and Sculpture Site.
